What inspired you to start your business?
About 15 years ago, I owned a business in the States whose purpose was to connect and support women in business with resources, tools and connections to help them grow. After an event one day, a member came up to me and said, “Jen – being a part of this has changed my life!” WELL – from that point on, I knew my mission in life was to add value to as many people as I possibly could for the rest of my life. Soon after shifting to NZ back in 2010, the opportunity to become a business coach presented itself, and I knew the time was right for me to begin having a wider positive impact on my community. Fast forward to the present and you’ll find me living out my mission every day through my roles as a Certified Business Coach, Trainer and Conference Speaker.
Tell us about your business?
I specialise in helping people in the professional services industries (ie: medical, legal, financial, consulting, etc) build more satisfying, sustainable busineses. I do this by tailoring solutions to support better results in their areas of need – for instance: strategy and goal-setting, sales process, marketing activity, team communication, client experience.
As a result of working with 1-to-1 coaching clients, I have had the distinct pleasure of growing the training and speaking side of my business and have now spoken at 14 annual conferences here in NZ and directly trained over 350 people.
My particular areas of expertise are Leadership (I’m a John Maxwell Certified Leadership Coach & Trainer), Communication and Sales/Marketing Processes.
What do you love about running your business?
I get to add value to people and make a positive difference every day – and make a living doing it!! Who could ask for more? I love one-to-one client interaction, as it is wonderful to watch clients have ‘AHA’ moments and learn new things that they can put into practice. I love training and speaking to groups, as it’s great fun for me as the speaker AND attendees walk away with actual tools they can implement. My business allows me the flexibility to create my schedule to suit my family life – I’m mum to a fabulous 16-year-old girl and have a hubby who is a Clinical Psychologist – ‘Dr Josh’
What have been some of your biggest challenges?
By far the biggest challenge I’ve faced is building a business in a new country – having no friends or family (beyond our little core of 3) to support me.
What I learned through that process was that GETTING and STAYING VISIBLE was absolutely key to building a personal brand and becoming known and respected in my community. There is NO substitute for face to face interaction, and that’s what saw me through! Venus was a key part of helping me grow my profile through those early years – AND I’ve made some awesome friends within Venus over the last several years.
Do you have a favourite quote?
People often describe me as ‘Inspiring’. I hope that stems from me internalising a favourite quote from Maya Angelou – (paraphrasing here!): “I”ve learned that people will forget what you said, people will forget what you did, but people will never forget how you made them feel.”
Who inspires you, and why?
I’m inspired by many things and people. My clients inspire me because they’re choosing to step outside their comfort zones and be held accountable for making positive changes in their lives and businesses – and that’s hard! My daughter inspires me, as she’s one of those kids with an ‘old soul’ and a really well-developed sense of ethics – she makes me proud every day. I’m inspired by where we live! I recall a recent trip to the States I took, and upon returning home to NZ and stepping outside the airport, I immediately was struck by the scent of trees and the calmness of our environment.
What growth have you experienced being in Venus?
My business has taken a turn into the Training and Conference Speaking realm that I didn’t expect at first. People in Venus have referred me and led me to opportunities and people I never would have met on my own. I’m incredibly proud of having been involved in creating the content for many of the business workshops in the Venus Academy – what a thrill to see those being delivered around the country! THAT ticks the box of living out my mission by expanding my impact and adding value!
Women are redefining success and growing businesses on their terms: What does success look like to you?
Success, to me, isn’t necessarily financial. Yes I want to have a financially successful business so that I can afford to be philanthropic. But more than that, I believe success is waking up every day excited by what I do and KNOWING, without a doubt, that what I do is valuable and truly helps people.
What’s your favourite pastime when you are not working?
I’m around people all the time and need to be “on” and extroverted so often that my down time is normally spent in typical “introvert” activities like reading, doing crossword puzzles, listening to music, taking a walk outside and hanging with my family!
