What inspired you to start your business?

I was studying nutrition at university and I drifted into helping people lose weight. My father died just over 3 years ago from cancer associated with chronic diabetes. I really realised then  that if I could help people choose healthier food, create sustainable healthier habits and lose weight; I could potentially prevent them from developing disease. I was inspired to assist people struggling with their weight and food choices to make better choices. I believe no one should  have to suffer and lose the quality of their life like my father did.

Tell us about your business?

I am a weight loss consultant – I love it! Under my company name it says Health Wellness Weight Loss.  I am firstly interested in helping people achieve better health through the food they eat and then weight loss.  I bring my love and passion for healthy food to my clients to help them eat more healthily and lose weight. The New You also helps clients (women and men) tweak their unhealthy habits into healthier habits. Weight loss is just not a number on a scale to me, its more holistic. I’m interested in their stress, sleep, nutrition and exercise as well.

What do you love about running your business?

I love the work life balance I have and the total joy of doing what I love – helping people become healthier. The freedom it gives me to work when I want and fit in my hours to suit my clients; many who work full time and lead very busy lives. It is incredibly rewarding to see a client, feel better, look better and become more comfortable in themselves, their clothes and their improved confidence.

What have been some of your biggest challenges?

Self direction, motivation, technology! One of the biggest challenges I face is changing dynamics of the clients e.g. sometimes I get a run on clients who need to come weekly, sometimes fortnightly. Of course there is also the challenge of keeping a steady stream of new clients coming to me and having a consistent cash flow. The biggest mistake I made was when I was really busy was not carry on advertising to attract new clients. It’s so important to keep advertising.

Do you have a favourite quote?

If you do tomorrow, what you did today
You will get tomorrow what you got

Who inspires you, and why?

Gosh there are so many. It’s cliche but I’d have to say my Mum Colleen. I would not be the woman I am today without her direction as she was the first person to bring personal growth and self development books and speakers to my attention when I was about 19/20. Of course I wasn’t interested but when I was ready to learn and improve myself I knew just what to look for and I have her to thank for that.

What growth have you experienced being in Venus?

Getting outside of my comfort zone – having to meet complete strangers and tell them about myself.
It has increased my confidence and ability to meet and network and not be afraid. Gives me ideas on how I can improve my business.

Women are redefining success and growing businesses on their terms: What does success look like to you?

Success to me is going to work but not feeling like its work. Loving what I do and knowing I have chosen the right path. Success to me is not so much about the money but having a business that lets me earn money and create a life of joy and balance. A career that lets me do what I love but still have time for my family and travel.

What’s your favourite pastime when you are not working?

My favourite favourite favourite pastime is cooking and creating new recipes whilst listening to health related podcasts. Sometimes I read my biochemistry textbook because it’s just so interesting but otherwise I’ll have my nose buried in a new book on healthy eating and creating ultimate health and wellness. Someone told me once they estimated I thought about food every 5 minutes.
