Kim Oliver, Willowgrove Consulting – Albany Group

What inspired you to start your business?

The many horror stories I heard from clients while working in the industry.

Tell us about your business?

I help people to understand their risk and provide insurance solutions to help protect against those risks. I provide specialist advice on Life insurance, Health insurance, Income protection cover, Trauma cover, Total Permanent Disability cover, as well as assist on Kiwisaver and ACC. I can also provide advice on some business insurance solutions, and Health & Safety plans.

What do you love about running your business?

Being able to help people, educate them, and knowing that I have made a difference.

What have been some of your biggest challenges?

Getting started is hard for all of us, but especially with the reputation that the insurance industry has, it is hard to change people’s minds and show them that I am different to those who have given them the bad experience. No one wants to talk about insurance, but we all need to!

Do you have a favourite quote?

”Fight for those you have lost, and those you do not want to lose” I heard it on tv one day when I was younger and have no idea who said it, but it has changed how I lived my life since that day.

What growth have you experienced being in Venus?

I used to be terrible at public speaking, and even though I still dislike it, I feel much more confident. Knowing that all I have to do is 60 seconds makes it a lot easier, and you know you are not the only one who feels that way, most of us do!

Women are redefining success and growing businesses on their terms: What does success look like to you?

Being able to provide an income of which my husband and I can live a comfortable and happy life, allowing me to retire early and travel together.

What’s your favourite pastime when you are not working?

My main hobby I have turned into another business: Flame And Scent Ltd. I specialise in custom blended and natural soy candles and other home fragrance products. I love working with the fragrances, and melting the wax can be surprisingly relaxing.
